My favourite branded April Fools Day pranks


April Fools day was two days ago so I thought I would do a quick round up of my favourite branded April Fools Day pranks.

Companies with high marketing budgets and creative staff and agencies can create hilarious and often-times believable advertisements and ‘new products’ for launch on April Fools day. This is a great time for companies to show their sense of humour.

Google has fooled people over the years with their incredible April Fools Day ads. This year they advertised a very convincing new technology – Google Nose -‘The new scensation in search’. The video offered the ability to search for smells as well as identify smells in your environment. Google Nose went one further with the prank and offered a trial scent to test if you put your nose up to the computer and sniff… Would have loved to have seen people in the office doing that one!

YouTube announced that it is ready to select a winner! YouTube explained that it was shutting down for the next ten years while it picks a winner from the videos uploaded so far. There were some awesome cameos from YouTube celebrities in this one.

Richard Branson personally revealed a new Virgin innovation on his blog:

“I’m thrilled to announce that Virgin has created another world-first with the introduction of the technology required to produce the world’s first glass-bottomed plane. This technological innovation coincides with the start of Virgin Atlantic Airways’ first ever domestic service to Scotland.”

Animals were a big theme with two big companies piggybacking on our love for our furry friends. Sony announced an adorable new product line called ‘Sony Animalia’ specially designed and created for pets. With products called K9 4K TV, M3-OW KittyCans, and In-Cage Speakers, how could you resist?

Vimeo accepts and understands that 77.7% (I made that statistic up) of all videos on the internet are of cats and so on April 1st they rebranded as Vimeow.

“…it cannot be denied that cat videos, with their unforgettable characters and riveting plot lines, are here to stay.”

They claimed to offer all new cat-centric services including:

  • Following is now called Patiently Stalking
  • The Forum is now called The Litterbox
  • Add aloofness to any video
  • Your mouse is now an actual mouse
  • Room for all your cat videos

Mouthwash brand Scope knows just how to stay on trend – BACON! Scope Bacon claims to be just like every other mouthwash but it tastes like bacon – sounds damn good to me.

And finally, my personal favourite – Kid President takes over the White House!

    A good laugh is always in order. This post by stacysbloghasit is a compilation of the funniest April Fools Day pranks this year. It is just great when companies show the lighter side of business and stop taking themselves so serious. Wish they would do it more often really. Making your customers smile can only be great customer service!
